PSHS 2nd Screening Results

I'm back from Bangkok. Good news. I thank God for letting my son pass the 2nd screening Philippine Science High School (PSHS) exams.

All in all 803 passed the 2nd screening exams. I tabulated the results by campus and for the Main Campus by school. Here are the results:

It is noticeable that roughly 10% of passers for the main campus come from the Ateneo de Manila University. Also, students from "good" private schools have better chances of passing the PSHS entrance exams.

There are a few reasons that might account for this:
1. Most parents enroll their gifted children in private schools
2. Some schools like ATENEO have Grade 7 which is a great advantage over private schools
3. Private school education is a lot better than public school system
4. Or PSHS entrance exams do not distinguish well enough the gifted children from those with good education. This is understandable because no exam is perfect.

Anyway, congratulations to all passers.

God is good... ALL the time.

Dear Pidio,

It's me again. Congratulations to your son. To God be the glory. You really are a statistician now! I wish I have the talent and the desire. I agree with some of the things you wrote and disagree on others. I do not think that private schools offer better education. Some private schools offer better opportunities. Many private schools are diploma mills. Ateneo is an exception. So is probably DLSU and schools of similar stature. Why not make a study of private schools in general and how their graduates fare in entrance exams. Kudos to public schools. My conjecture is, although not similar to that of Goldbach's, is that when a student is well nourished, has access to resources, has a great support system, then the chances of passing any exam is much higher than those who are on the other side of the fence. Well, I think, you do not need a mathematical proof for that. It could probably be axiomatized.
